There are many Northern Thai delicacies in Chiang Mai Old City. If you want to eat Hainanese chicken rice, I highly recommend visiting Kiat Ocha in the city center!
Kiat Ocha (เกียรติโอชา), selling Hainanese chicken rice since 1957, has a nostalgic interior with green walls, white ceramic tile wainscoting, ceiling fans hanging overhead, and aged newspapers pasted on the walls.
The restaurant is packed during lunchtime. Even if you arrive an hour early, there may be limited seating. If you come around 2 PM, the chicken may already be sold out, so it’s best to come early.
There is a Chinese menu. Besides Hainanese chicken rice, they also serve fried chicken rice. If you want both, order the combo set (60 THB). The poached chicken looks light in flavor, but with the sauce, it becomes delicious!
There are three dipping sauces to choose from: sour-spicy, soybean paste, and sweet chili. The best match for the poached chicken is the soybean paste sauce, which tastes fantastic!
The rice is slightly oily but not greasy at all. The accompanying bowl of chicken soup has a mild and slightly sweet taste.
The pork satay here is also famous. A set of 10 skewers (60 THB) comes with condiments and satay sauce, making the meal even more satisfying.
The deliciousness doesn’t stop here! A meal wouldn’t be complete without dessert. Try a cup of fruit stewed fresh milk (25 THB), with custard at the bottom, fresh milk, and papaya—a unique and tasty treat you won’t find elsewhere.
